What Happens at the Workshop?

The activities of the workshop are influenced by the makeup of the participants. A typical day is outlined below.

Our week-long workshop offers several different activities every day. Each days opens and closes with everyone playing together the in large saxophone ensemble comprised of soprano through bass saxophones. The objectives are to asses and improve sightreading skills, to begin building musical awareness through ensemble playing, and to introduce, through our encounters with the music, different aspects of saxophone fundamentals.

Different sessions are offered by the instructors which discuss all types of saxophone related topics. Fundamentals of playing are presented in detail with concrete ideas and suggestions for mastery. Topics discussed vary but usually include discussions of playing positions, embouchure development, technical development, articulation development, breath support and control, tone development, overtones, expanding the range, and all manner of musical ideas and concepts.
